Every destination has posts of its own, and each one is honest about the hard season. Flagstaff gets real snow. Idyllwild is remote. The California coast is gray through June. Anyone staying 90 days finds that out by day 12 anyway, so it may as well be on the page before booking.

Short-term rentals under 30 days are banned in the City of Monterey under City Code §22-19.5. Carmel-by-the-Sea and Santa Cruz operate separate programs with their own requirements. Advertising banned STRs in Monterey is also prohibited.
Owner resourcesPismo Beach requires an annual STR permit via CitizenServe, restricts new STRs in residential zones since November 2023, and mandates fire safety inspections. Avila Beach, Cayucos, and Paso Robles each operate separate programs. No permit cap or primary-residence requirement currently in Pismo Beach.
Owner resourcesSan Bernardino County requires an STR permit for Joshua Tree and the High Desert via EZOP, including a mandatory exterior inspection, 20-day neighbor notification, and annual renewal. Commercial events are prohibited. January 2025 audit identified hundreds of unlicensed operators.
